Flexibility in Readers Notebooks... plus a Preview of Our Back-channeling

Today after a long morning of testing, Mrs. Doyle's and my Language Arts classes read together Chapters 6, 7, and part of 8 in Titanic: Voices from the Disaster.  Students had a lot of flexibility in how they recorded their thinking in their readers notebooks.

Requirements for responses:
  • When Ms. Reed and I come around to look at notebooks (we listened to the CD today, which gave us some flexibility to work beside students), we should be able to get good insights into what you're thinking and be able to respond to what you've written.
  • When we review tomorrow, you should be able to look back on your notes and remember the important things that happened with today's reading.
Check out the ways our readers recorded their thinking:

Ms. Reed's sticky notes that show a mix of pictures and interesting/important facts
Erin's list of important events and her reactions
Troy's pictures to go with important events in the chapter
Miss Reed's KNOW/WONDER chart (her handwriting is way more legible than mine!)
Finally, Mrs. Doyle and I were excited to experiment with using Google Drive as a "back channel" tool for students to engage in interactive readers notebooks.  More to come after we get a chance to reflect with our "guinea pig" group ... but check out the collaborative work that Emily, Kurt, Cailyn, and Cameron did during read aloud:

QUESTIONS: What did your readers notebook look like today?  Which of the notebook methods above do you think might work for you?

  1. My readers notebook looks like a know and wonder chart. It was colorful because I highlight important things about the Titanic. If I didn't use a know and wonder chart, I think that the list method like Erin used would work for me, too because it would me see everything clearer.

    1. That makes sense, Caroline! The nice thing about the KNOW/WONDER chart is that it pretty much works for any kind of reading... so now that you've become comfortable with it, I bet it would help you in other classes, too! I'm glad that you get to enjoy your colorful school supplies, too :)

  2. My readers notebook looked like the a Know and Wonder chart but on the computer.I think this is the method I want to use because it's more organized and more than one person works on it at the same time, so if there's places where I'm confused I could read some of the Knows. This method helps with remembering important facts too, since when your writing something and you hear something important you could forget it.

    1. I am definitely someone who forgets her facts, Melike, so it's helpful for me to write mine down, too. We'll have to spend some time reflecting on how the Google experiment worked out for your group!

    2. I think there were a lot of different ways to write notes but I personally think the google drive, know wonder chart or the pictures plus captions are the best because if we use those three things than people could easily pick which one they like because if you like technology you can do google drive or if you like having some help, if you like to draw you can draw pictures and captions and if you like just writing notes plain then you could do the know wonder chart. Personally, I think for me the google drive would be the best because I am a faster typer than writer and I like how there are groups which can help me out or think of new ideas. Although I also like to draw and write the captions. I'm a little tired of doing the know wonder charts just on paper by yourself.

    3. I also like the idea of having choices, Brigid! We are all different learners, and I think it's important for every learner to be able to know what works best for him/ her (and be able to tell me why that method works). That's real life!

I'm definitely open to having more students try out the Google Drive notes if they can show me that they can do it in a focused, on-task way. Let's give it a try this week!

  3. On Friday I tried showing the information by drawing small pictures and making captions. It went okay but i don't think it displayed information and facts as well as a know/wonder chart. Also you can't really draw wonders. Although drawing can take less time I think know/wonder charts are better.

    1. KNOW/WONDER charts work well for me, too, Elsa, though probably because I'm such a terrible artist that by the time I figure out how to draw something, the thoughts are already gone!

  4. I think that doing a know and wonder chart is the best way of showing my thinking, choice number 4.I think it worked out the best for me because I'm not very good at showing my thinking with pictures and I'm not good with computers and I understand the best is by doing a know and wonder chart.

  5. I would like to do the goggle drie because I'm a way faster typed then writer plus it's a lot more neat when I type and way easier to understand…. I would like to try it to see how it works and I'd it would be easier or would writing be better.

    1. You are indeed a very quick typer, Josh! I like that you seem to be able to listen and type at the same time. Let's keep going with it!

  6. On Friday my readers notebook had a bunch of pictures I drew and they all had captions under them. On thursday I was in the group using google drive and that worked really well for me. I'd like to continue to use that.

  7. My readers notebook is colorful. Its also looks like ERIN'S notebook and its a list chart. Also I have a couple of facts that are the same just at different places. My notebook helps you out and help you understand what happened about the TITANIC.

  8. My readers notebook looked like the one that you see on the board becauswe I was helping on my Ipad. I think the computer method works best for me because I can make wonders off of other peoples knows. I can also make knows off of other peoples wonders. The only problem with that is that you might get two of the same knows, or two of the same wonders. But I haven't seen that happen yet. But to wrap it up the computer method works best for me.
